This collection contains materials relating to the Sayler family, primarily wife Jessie Dixon Sayler (1896-1988), her appointment as Collector of Customs by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, her work with the Fragrant Garden for the Blind and Keep Beautiful Savannah Clean Committee, her role as Matron of Honor at the launching of the N.S. Savannah. Also included is material on the military careers of Major General Henry Benton Sayler (1893-1970) and his son John M. Sayler (1926-1998). There is also information on Henry and Jessie’s funerals.

Major General Henry B. Sayler was born on November 4, 1893 in Huntington, Indiana. He graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1915 and in 1945 was assigned as Chief Ordnance Officer for the European Theater of Operations by General Eisenhower, making one of his responsibilities amassing the supplies and equipment for D-day. Jessie Dale Dixon Sayler was born in Savannah, Georgia. She married Lieut. Henry B. Sayler of the Coast Artillery Corps. on October 6, 1917 in Savannah. She was appointed Collector of Customs in 1954, appointed by President Eisenhower she was the first female to hold the position in Savannah. Jessie was also active in many community organizations and clubs. They had three children, Henry B. Sayler, Jr., Dale Morgan (Sayler), and John M. Sayler. Both sons graduated from West Point.
